Penkkarit eli ABI päivä

February is almost over. There's too much of snow everywhere and flu in the air.
But in the shop I can see already Easter cards for sale! I don't feel spring at all yet.
I haven't written about some Finnish February tradition - Penkkarit. The last day of the high school. Abiturients celebrate it in a very spectacular way. They take a ride with the trucks, many of them are disguised, they are screaming, dancing, jumping and throw candies on the streets.
I took these pictures from my kitchen window.
Helmikuu on jo melkein loppunut, lunta on aivan liikaa joka paikassa ja flunssaa liikeellä.
Mutta kaupoissa on jo myynnissä pääsiäiskortteja! Minulla ei ole vielä yhtään keväinen olo mielessä.
En kirjoitanut vielä erikoisest ja mielenkiintoisesta helmikuun tapahtumasta jota tänä vuonna juhlitiin 16.helmikuuta. Penkinpainajaiset eli penkkarit.
Se on sellainen päivä, kun tuhansia lukion abiturientteja juhlii koulun päättymistä.
He ajavat kuorma-autojen kyydissä ja heittävät ihmisille karkkia. Monilla abeilla (abiturienteilla) on naamiasaut päällä. Nämä kuvat otin keittiöni ikkunasta.

My very 1st Finnish impressions 2002

I have come across my diary from 2002 when I came to Finland for the very 1st time.
That's a major collection of my remarks on Finland. I post here some of them.
1. I was surprised at the rocky shore of Helsinki and in general many rocks and huge stones in the city and surroundings. Many building projects in Finland involves detonating of dynamite to crush the rocks. Sand on the fortress of Suomenlinna was shipped in from Estonia.
2. 1 and 2 cent euro coins are not in use in Finland.
3. Fat free milk ... I still do not understand nutrition value of such product.
4. Drinking water from taps in Finland is allowed, safe and common.
5. For the first time I have seen bulldogs, poodles and schnauzers with the naturally long tails.
It is sad that in Poland there's still common practice of docking (tailing) dogs of some breeds, (cutting tail of the dogs) despite it is not legal.
6. You must wave for a bus if you want to get into! Forgetting doing it costed me a lot of nerves and time.
7. There are only two Roman Catholic churches in the whole capital region of Finland, only 7 in the whole Finland. I've just checked, that there are 268 Roman Catholic churches only in my home city - Lublin archdiocese. Finland has the lowest proportion of Roman Catholics in all of Europe.

Löysin äskettäin päiväkirjani vuodelta 2002, silloin tulin Suomeen ensimmäistä kertaa.
Kirjoitin kirjaan huomioitani Suomesta. Päätin laittaa pari niistä blogiin:
1. Kallioita joka puolella ja kallioinen meren ranta oli minulle yllätys. Rakennus projektit Suomessa vaativat kallioiden murskaamisesta dynamiitin avulla. Hiekka Suomenlinnassa on peräisin Virosta.
2. Suomessa yhden ja kahden sentin kolikot eivät ole käytössä.
3. Rasvaton maito ... edeellen en ymmärrä mikä on ravintoarvo sellaisessa tuotteessa.
4. Veden juominen suoraan hanasta on sallittu ja turvallista.
5. Suomessa ensimmäistä kertaa olen nähnyt buldogin, villakoiran ja snautserin normaalin pitkän hännän kanssa. On surullista, että Puolassa typistäminen on vielä yleistä, vaikka se on laitonta.
6. Pitää vilkuttaa bussille, jos haluat saada kyydin. En tiedä miksi se oli minulle erittäin vaikeaa muistaa ja sen takia tuhlasin paljon aikaa (ja hermojakin).
7. Suomen pääkaupunkiseudulla on vain kaksi roomalaiskatolisesta kirkoa, ja vain seitsemän koko Suomessa. Tarkistin äskettäin netistä, että pelkästään minun kotikaupungin arkkihiippakunnassa (Lublinin alueella) on 268 roomalaiskatollista kirkkoa. Suomessa on Euroopan pienin prosenttiluku roomalaiskatolilaisia.

Happy Valentine's Day! Hyvää Ystävänpäivää!

St.Valentine's Day in Finland is celebrated as the Friends' Day.
To me, it's a much nicer version than the original 'lovey-dovey' one.
Typical Valentine's Day brings to my mind the awkward situations, broken hearts, and getting heart shaped cards NOT from the persons we were hoping for.
Today in Finland people send to each other some childish cards with the Friends' Day wishes,
or give to each other the heart shaped cookies. In supermarkets many sellers tell to the clients: 'Have a Happy Friends' Day!'
To some people this can be annoying and unnecessary.
But why not to make one day like that, especially in the middle of the grey winter.

Pyhän Valentinuksen Päivää juhlitaan Suomessa ystävänpäivänä.
Minusta, se on miellyttävämpi versio alkuperaisesta, joka keskittää huomion rakastavaisiin
ja romantiikkaan.
Tyypillinen Pyhän Valentinuksen Päivä tuo minulle mieleen kömpelöitä tilanteita, murtuneita sydämmiä, ja saapuvia sydämenmuotoisia kortteja, mutta EI ihmiseltä keneltä toivoisimme.
Suomessa ihmiset lähettävät toisille lapsellisia kortteja, joissa lukee 'Hyvää Ystävänpäivää'
tai antavat sydämenmuotoisia keksejä. Monissa marketeissa asiakkaat kuulevat tänään myyjilta: 'Hyvää Ystävänpäivää!'
Jollekin se voi tuntua ärsyttävältä tai tarpeetomalta, mutta minusta ei ole mitään huonotapaista sellaisessa päivässä, varsinkin harmaan talven keskellä.

This post's title is one of the answers to a question in the yesterday internet forum about the harsh frosts.
After long waiting for a winter, it came. Today morning in Kiutaköngäs near Kuusamo thermometers showed -39,2 'C. Here in Vantaa is -22'C and wind.
Today in the morning our neighbour was standing in front of the house, smoking cigarette. Without a hat, with an open jacket. I asked him wasn't he cold, and he answered: 'I like that! Im a winter man!'
... after few steps outside today I was thinking: 'what the hell Im doing here', but nice to know there are people who enjoy:-)

Tämän postauksen otsikko on yksi vastauksista kysymykseen Pidätkö paukkupakkasista? iltalehden foorumissa verkossä. Tänään Kuusamon Kiutakönkäällä mitattiin -39,2 astetta.
Täällä Vantaalla on -22, ja tuulee.
Tänä aamuna naapurimme seisoi tupakoimassa talon edessä ilman hattua, takki auki.
Kysyin eiko ole hänellä kylmä, hän vastasi: 'Mä tykkään siitä! Mää oon talvi-ihminen!'
Parin askeleen jälkeen mietin: 'mitä minä oikeasti täällä teen', mutta kivaa kun joku viihtyy:-)
